What are algae?
Algae are primitive plants which, through photosynthesis, combine water and carbon dioxide to form the sugars which are essential for their growth.
Like plants, they produce oxygen, but in the absence of light they absorb it using previously stored sugars, producing carbon dioxide.
There are many different species and they can develop especially in the following conditions:
- Excess of nutrients not absorbed by aquatic plants
- Excessive photoperiod
- Inadequate lighting
